year-end fic meme [27 Dec 2009|12:28pm]

inlovewithnight
[ mood | hungry ]

This year's stories are under this tag. Plus the as-yet-unrevealed Yuletide and Popoffacork fics.

Favorite story this year: You know, I wrote a lot (for me) of long, serious business fic this year, but I think my *favorite* is Can't Stop Laughing, the shortish and entirely random Pete/Gabe high school AU.

My best story this year: I hate this question. Maybe alt.shakespeare.burbage?

Most underappreciated by the universe, in my opinion: I hate this question, too! Um. Going back and looking, really, everything I wrote got a response either perfectly in proportion to what it was, or far in excess of it and I'm grateful.

Most fun story: My Yuletide fic, I think. Or alt.shakespeare.burbage.

Sexiest story: Jump A Little Lighter. Fred wearing Gunn's boxers. ♥

"Holy crap, that's wrong, even for you" story: Trigger Finger. Brad/Ray gunplay, yeah, that was pretty dirty.

Story that shifted my own perceptions of the characters: Guest Vocals By. The Pete Wentz I had in my head when I started this was not the one I finished up with.

Hardest story to do: My Popoffacork fic. I think all three of the people I forced to beta and listen to my whining regarding that thing want to hurt me. Badly.

Biggest surprise: But Hey, You're All Right. I didn't realize there was an audience for Ray/Ray late-in-life first-time fic.

Most revealing story: I don't really think my fic reveals all that much about me.

A story I want remembered: Oh, geez. Any of them? I mean...it's fic, you know, it's ephemeral, people don't remember, it's the nature of the beast.

a few more recs. and pirates. [25 Dec 2009|10:15pm]

inlovewithnight
[ mood | listless ]

Man, you guys, POTC2 is on TV right now, and while this movie really kind of sucks, it's making me all heartclenchy with how much I love Will Turner. And Elizabeth Swann. And Will/Elizabeth.

I should write fic about them, or something.

A few more recs:

Perspective, Dragonriders of Pern. Oh, the future. Ouch.

Sorrows Bring Heaven, Anne of Green Gables. Set after baby Joy dies in book 5. Oh, oh, oh, Anne/Gilbert. Oh, my heart.

brave new world, Alien: Resurrection. Gorgeous language and tight, sharp characterization. You don't have to know the movie well to read this and be highly impressed.

Also. We watched Dirty Dancing earlier, because it was on, and it made me cry because I am a giant loser. And I think a Gabe/William AU should exist for that, where William is Johnny Castle and Gabe is the spoiled rich kid. Yes, I hate myself, why do you ask? (If this already exists, link the shit out of me, plz.)

I probably should promise now not to post at all tomorrow, after how fucking spammy I've been today. /o\

first yuletide recs [25 Dec 2009|03:12pm]

inlovewithnight
[ mood | okay ]

Not Forever, Just For Now. Uncle Tupelo RPF. Band-breakup fic. Incredible. God, I love stories about boys in bands, drunken idiots that they all are.

Eyes Whirling Bright. Dragonriders of Pern. Moreta. Lovely slice-of-Weyr-life. Oh, one of my first fandoms, I look on you with such affection to this day.

And To Tilt With Lips. Shakespeare, Henry IV plays. Wow. This is just...wow. Kate and Hotspur are a formidable pair, and the focus here is Kate, fencing with the court and Prince Hal, standing by her man in the power-behind-the-throne sense of the word. Gorgeous language.

No Honest Man. Springsteen songs, "Atlantic City." Bruce-Stu narrators are made of stupid optimism and bad decisions. This fleshes that out into a lovely, sad story with an inevitable end.

More reading later, I think I need a nap now. Cheers.

test test [25 Dec 2009|12:40pm]

[ mood | pleased ]

Testing out the wee netbook, which I have named Nils. :D Oh it is so cute! I will have to get used to the tiny keyboard, though. And the Windows crap.

Also my mom made this hot chocolate that is INCREDIBLE; it's made with hand-whipped cream IN THE ACTUAL SUBSTANCE OF THE THING, and chocolate *batter*, and then hot milk, and oh my god it may actually kill me. So good.

Oh, no, Puggle #2 has stolen a cinnamon roll and is running madly around the house. Puggles: cute but *bad*. That is your news update.

Hello, LJ! Happy Friday or Christmas, whichever is relevant!

(I got a netbook! OMG. I'm torn between getting it all set up and playing with it RIGHT NOW OMG and waiting until I can get someone to walk me through booting it on Linux instead of Windows. DECISIONS. I will probably set it up and play with it now, though, c'mon.)

We're watching G-Force, the mutant guinea pig movie. I can't actually look at the screen, because talking small animals are...no.

Yuletide-wise: between the drag from the server load and the fact that my sister's Internet is pretty slow anyway, I'm not going to be able to do much reading at all for a bit, unfortunately. I wanted to publicly thank my author for my story: Surprise and Negotiation, which is from Mercedes Lackey's Valdemar novels and is about Kerowyn, with Tarma and Warrl and Kethry appearing as well. ::hearts:: It's lovely and perfectly in the style of the books and it made me very very happy this morning.

The only other story I've read so far, because it lit up my flist with glee, is Somewhere In The Swamps Of Jersey, or, The Courtship of Steve Van Zandt, which is E STREET BAND RPF YOU GUYS SOMEONE WROTE E STREET BAND RPF. And it is heart-clenchy and dorky and THEM and you should read it right now and squee with me.

Hope you're all having a great day, and lots of love. <3

Etch-a-Sketch doesn't involve much hill climbing. GPS-a-Sketch in San Francisco does, however:

Merry Christmas from me and [info]whatever_art to you!

In other news: not going anywhere for Christmas. Staying in San Francisco, hosting a 10 person orphan dinner. But then going to the Caribbean on a 7 night cruise over New Year's with parents, Sierra, my brother Cole and his girlfriend. Should be fun. :)

An article [info]likeadeuce linked me to yesterday: Clarence Clemons had Ringo Starr's Help During E Street Split. Two things come to mind: a) Bruce, you were *such a dick* about that, and b) LOVE EACH OTHER MORE GENTLEMEN I DARE YOU.

Speaking of dorky musicians, I don't know why this is so cute but it totally is:
GabrielSaporta rome if you want to. rome around the world. .... and also, when in rome, don't take long showers b/c the hot water runs out real quick like

Gabe. ♥

i take requests. sometimes. [23 Dec 2009|11:39am]

inlovewithnight
[ mood | hungry ]

I usually fail to *fill* them, but I do take them.

Okay! So. Popoffacork draft is done, I'm waiting for [info]sionnain to render a verdict on the ending and then I send it to my actual beta, and then I edit and then I send it to the mod (this makes sense in my head, don't question me), and tomorrow I'm going to have a lot of time at airports and/or on planes.

So I need something else to write. Clearly. I mean, I could read a book, but whatever.

Behind the cut are my current WsIP, or request something else you'd like to see me work on. I feel horribly narcissistic doing this, ack. /o\ I just like getting ideas!

WsIP )

Okay, well, yes, lunch now.

alcohol, hurray! [22 Dec 2009|10:23pm]

[ mood | pleased ]

So this is what happened after work today.

1. It took me an hour and a half to get home. It should be noted that I live, um, seven and a half miles from my office. I don't know what was going on around here today, but I don't like it one bit.
2. [info]cidercupcakes came to visit! We were going to go get dinner, but the idea of going back into traffic made us both howl like injured weasels.
3. So instead we walked to the grocery store across the street for food items and mixers to go with the bottle of tequila in my pantry.
4. An interesting decision was made to plow the sidewalks in such a way that occasionally you just run into a giant wall of snow. That you have to wade through. We howled some more and got snow in our socks.
5. Drinking!
6. Yelling about all of the hate in our hearts!
7. Discussion of Bruce Springsteen!
8. She went home and I finished my fic draft on the wings of tequila.
9. \o/

You guys, how am I even going to pretend to have any interest in work whatsoever for the next two days? Also I need to do laundry unless I plan to go to Texas with no underwear, a cocktail dress, a pair of fleece pants, and a Drive-By Truckers hoodie. While those do sound like the ingredients for a fun weekend, not a weekend with my family, y'know?

the world's grumpiest cat wants me to go to bed [21 Dec 2009|10:32pm]

inlovewithnight
[ mood | sleepy ]

But she's just going to have to wait, because I don't feel like it. So there, cat.

My Yuletide letter, for Treat purposes, if anyone feels like it. I'd totally forgotten my own requests, that's really embarrassing. Um.

Today at work people were mocking me for the fact that I'm working all the way through Thursday. >:( Look, people, I'm sorry you don't get how this works, but do you really think I'd be doing that by choice? Think about it for two minutes and OBVIOUSLY I was told that I *needed* to be there through Thursday. Screw you guys.

My playlist just tossed "Daughters of the Soho Riots" up at me, and ever since I decided that was my Pete/Mikey song, I find it very distracting. Then again, it's only distracting me from taunting the cat, so 'sall good.

If you were flying to Texas on Christmas Eve, would you take one giant suitcase or two duffel bags, one with clothes and one with presents? Show your work and make my decisions for me. :D?

This was even more scattered than usual. The only important part is the Yuletide link. Carry on.

list and whatnot [21 Dec 2009|11:54am]

inlovewithnight
[ mood | sore ]

To-do in some approximation of order over the next few days:
- Survive work without biting anybody (repeat daily)
- Take money order to management office, ask them to fix my dryer, confirm January's rent rate, e-mail [info]settiai
- Finish fic, send it to beta
- Get a haircut (and possibly an eyebrow wax? possibly not)
- E-mail [info]insptr_penguin with when to stop by and make sure the cat's not dead while I'm gone
- Pack
- Feel horribly guilty about leaving cat home by herself
- Make beta changes to fic, send it to mod, worry that it sucks and will be mocked
- Fly to Texas
- Worry about the cat
- Christmas!
- Nap

Everyone on my Facebook page is talking about their babies! SO MANY BABIES. And I'm all "Awww, I want a baby!" and then I remember that's not true, what I actually want is a puppy. Sigh.

Work is a ghost town today. It makes it very hard to even feign productivity.

for just this once [19 Dec 2009|12:18am]

inlovewithnight
[ mood | tired ]

Yuletide story is uploaded. \o/ It's so ridiculously obvious that it's mine. Should be a fun Yuletide this year, if we don't explode AO3 and/or self-destruct in stupid.

According to People Who Supposedly Know These Things, we'll be basically snowed in around here this weekend. I'm still Michigan enough in my heart that it puzzles me to see this kind of reaction to snow, but I've learned enough about DC reactions to weather to accept the reality that this is going to be ridiculous. Maybe I'll finish my popoffacork fic! Or maybe I'll rewatch season 3 of The Office.

God, I'm so tired. I've been staring blankly at this post and trying to tell a story from work today, but upon reflection it's not at all interesting and the punchline is "some people aren't as funny as they think they are. And also kind of sexist." I should just write it off and go to bed, I guess.

Have a Mikeyway, just because )

[ mood | thoughtful ]

I keep pretending that I'm not going to post until I have something of value to say, but honestly, you guys know where the scroll bar and the defriend function are, right? Right.

This afternoon was such that I sent the following Tweets:
Well. I can never show my face in that post office again.

You know what's dumb? Pouring coffee on an anxiety attack. Oh, me. :(

And while the circumstances behind those are too stupid to talk about, and also I'd rather pretend they didn't happen, I am going to share two things that brightened my spirits when I got home.

This YouTube video, which I have had in a tab for nearly a week now. It is William Beckett and Michael Guy Chislett doing an acoustic cover of "Time After Time," and William is wearing a fantastic plaid shirt that I covet in a weird way, and it makes me smile.

This story, at the Criminal Minds holiday exchange, is Reid/Hotch, which is not a pairing I really ever gave much thought to. But I read it because I saw it recc'd and I wanted something to read. The following line really jumped at me as a beautiful example of detail in writing:

They drink white wine with ice cubes in it; Hotch doesn’t expect the company of anyone but serial killers these days, and the bottle was unopened and unchilled.

Pretty music and good writing exist in the world, you guys. Humanity doesn't need to turn it over to the squirrels *quite* yet, I think.

Hello hello, LJ. You get a rambly lunch-break post. I'm sorry. Love me?

One of my co-workers gave me a loaf of bread today. I assume this is a holiday gift. Otherwise I'm pretty confused.

Marvel issues DMCA notice to Dreamwidth regarding scans_daily. Will be interesting to see how this goes.

I'm trying to figure out a plan to rob a bank so I can go to Chicago for a concert in February. This makes perfect sense if you're me. Or maybe I could sell a kidney. You really only need one, right? Exactly. In other concert news, Cowboy Mouth is coming to DC again in January! \o/ [info]redbrickrose and I saw them over the summer and they were fabulous. That was the show where we physically ran into the Pride parade while walking from DuPont Circle to U Street. We are pretty but dumb.

Now I just need the Truckers to set some dates around here. Come on, bbs.

I am going to finish my popoffacork fic in the next two days. I AM. [info]romanticalgirl and [info]sionnain helped me work out a part I was stuck on, and I'm going to finish it and send it to [info]redbrickrose to beta and she's going to tell me if it sucks and I need to scrap the whole thing and write 1000 words of video-AU instead. It is a plan. And then I will be able to write porn. Or finish one of the ridiculous WsIP I have sitting in my GDocs. Or maybe take up needlepoint.

A week from now I will be surreptitiously cleaning up my desk so I can slip out early and catch my flight to Texas for Christmas. Game on.

How are all of you? Would you like to talk about something ridiculous and fictional in comments?

I just typed this in an e-mail to [info]sionnain: HE WOULD MOLEST ME WITH CREEPY LITTLE DOLL HANDS. THAT IS NOT OKAY.

Sometimes I just kind of sit back and think about my life, and things like that really kind of add texture, don't you think?

I had dinner with [info]cidercupcakes tonight! \o/ We planned two most excellent fic challenges to run at some point: Springsteen lyrics, and tech-support AUs. Stay tuned for awesome.

Someone offer me bribes to write another 500 words on my popoffacork fic before I'm allowed to stop for the night. :(

Oh! Also. How wrong would it be to call in sick to work tomorrow solely because it's the monthly staff meeting, and it's my one-year mark at Generic Nonprofit, so I would have to get up in front of everybody and receive a one-year pin? Standing up in front of a room full of people fills me with horror. But it would be pretty wrong, I suspect. Quite wrong. Sigh.

You guys, somehow I have lost both my camera and...my ability to put a fitted sheet on my bed. I don't know. I mean the first one, that makes sense, because I'm a slob and I live in my own debris, but there's really no excuse for how I stood here for twenty minutes, blankly rotating the sheet 90 degrees and trying again, and still at this moment am sitting on the bare mattress because I couldn't make it work.

I'll try again later. Perhaps. Perhaps not.

The cat is doing her best to convince me to trade her in for a paperweight.

Nick Jonas, young sir, it's nice that you're aiming high, but comparing yourself to Bruce Springsteen is just asking for gentle laughter, or possibly for me to find you and pull your hair.

Down and Out (The Academy Is...), because I told [info]sionnain I would.

I am tired of being cold.
